Reducer housing, also known as gearbox housing, is the load-bearing shell of speed reducers. It accommodates gears, shafts, bearings and lubricant, requiring good rigidity, vibration damping, sealing performance and dimensional stability. The commonly used materials are gray cast iron HT200 / HT250 (EN-GJL-200 / EN-GJL-250) and ductile iron QT450-10 (EN-GJS-450-10). The mainstream forming processes are resin-bonded sand casting (furan no-bake sand) and lost foam casting (LFC, expendable pattern casting).

For maller housings, we use shell-mold casting method. Shell mold casting (also called coated sand casting / Croning process) is very suitable for small reducer housings (HT200 / HT250 gray iron, QT450 ductile iron)，especially for medium & high volume orders. It strikes a good balance between precision, surface quality and batch stability.

Introduce of shell mold casting:

Shell mold casting, also known as the Croning process, is a precision expendable-mold casting process. It uses fine silica sand pre-coated with phenolic thermosetting resin. The resin-coated sand is brought into contact with a preheated metal pattern; the heat cures the resin and forms a thin, rigid sand shell (normally 5–15 mm thick). Two shell halves are stripped, assembled and clamped. Cores can be inserted if needed. The shell assembly is placed in a flask and backed up by steel shot or loose sand for support. Molten metal is poured into the gating system, solidified, then the shell is broken to remove the casting.

Advantage of shell mold casting processing:

Compared with green sand casting, shell molding delivers better surface finish, tighter dimensional tolerance, high repeatability and less machining allowance.
